At Hunt Chrysler Center, child passenger safety is one of our top priorities. If you use or are planning to use a car seat for one of your passengers, learn the LATCH system, designed to make installing seats more straightforward and safer.

What Is the LATCH System?

The LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) was introduced in 2002 to standardize installation for car seats and make them safer. Car seat installation can be tricky for parents to do at home without support, and some studies estimate that up to three out of every four car seats is not installed correctly. The LATCH system makes setting up your car seat more accessible than ever and gives you peace of mind knowing the seat will stay in place in case of an accident.

How Do I Use LATCH?

All new vehicles feature at least two lower anchor points and three tether anchor points. Your owner’s manual will tell you their location; find them and place the car seat appropriately. If you’re using a front-facing seat, attach the tethers to the tether anchor points and pull to tighten the strap, even if you use a seat belt to secure the chair.

The lower anchor points are an alternative to a seat belt, so tuck the seat belts out of the way if you’re using them. Then, attach the lower anchors to the anchor points and pull them to tighten. The child seat should move no more than an inch in any direction.
